Feliz Día de Los Reyes
Feliz Día de Los Reyes aunque sea un poco tarde!
Finding a Rosca this year was a tedious task, mostly because it wasn’t until 8pm and most people start buying them out the day before. I stopped at Food City first but all that was left were the extra-large ones and they looked like they’d had a rough day too. At the last-minute I remembered there was a Ranch Market by our home so I took a detour to try to get one from there. As expected when I walked to the bakery again all that remained were large enough to feed a gathering of many generations and even those were sparse.
I’d almost resolved to just go home and attempt to convince Mark that it was a good idea to celebrate the Feast a day late and give my best attempt at making a Rosca; though I knew that would never go over with his appreciation of technicalities. And just at that moment I saw a person walk by with the size we always get, as if I was given a sign! (I’m still recovering from the awful attempt at making Pan de Muerto on Dia de los Muertos!)
Mark let me make the first cut this year; I think in an attempt to not be the first to find a baby Jesus. I made the first cut then began the 2nd until half way through I hit something hard! Which could only mean one thing, I’d finally found the baby Jesus first. I excitedly pulled my piece up only to find that I’d barely nicked the head of one of the plastic trinkets and it was still stuck in the Rosca!
Mark has been the first to find baby Jesus for the past … five… maybe six years? We’ve lost count. It’s always him! So instead of just handing him over the next piece we decided he could pick his own.
He happily ate his piece decided on the fact that after so many years he’d picked a piece that didn’t have the trinket. BUT SURE ENOUGH half way through guess what he takes a bite down on! LITTLE INFANT BABY JESUS!

It’s not that he doesn’t want to find the little Jesus in the bread! It’s just that he’s been the first to find it so many years in a row it makes you begin to wonder if he’s missing a message here! The first couple years it’s “Oh yay you found baby Jesus!” then the next couple are “HAHA You got him again! How crazy!” After 5 or 6 it’s “Hmmm I think Baby Jesus is trying to tell YOU something!”
We decided until Candlemas we are going to give more focus on the Infant Jesus! Maybe he’s been trying to get our attention for a while and we haven’t been listening! All in all it was a wonderful evening and a beautiful way to distract from all the stresses that I’ve let consume me at work. But then again I should be allowing my faith to carry out that always…
